Looped
Looped is based on an actual 1965 recording session in which an intoxicated Tallulah Bankhead required eight hours to dub (or “loop”) a single line from her final movie, Die! Die! My Darling! The play shows Tallulah antagonizing the film editor assigned to the job, but also provides a raw, funny, and fascinating look into the scandalous life of an eccentric and legendary actress who once said, “If I had to live my life again, I’d make the same mistakes. Only sooner.”

Reviews
Kristin Andrews, Northumberland NewsOriginally published in Northumberland News
The Northumberland Players’ brings a brisk, witty and unexpectedly poignant play to the stage at The Firehall Theatre with “Looped”.
The play, anchored by a standout performance that captures both the glamour and the chaos of Hollywood legend Tallulah Bankhead, is currently playing at Cobourg’s Firehouse Theatre.
Written by Matthew Lombardo, produced by Leslee Argue and directed by Christina Pochmursky, “Looped” takes place over the course of a single exasperating afternoon in 1965, as Bankhead arrives in a recording studio to re-record — or “loop” — a single line of dialogue for her latest film. What follows is a battle of wills between Tallulah Bankhead (Kim Brouwer) and the increasingly strained sound editor Danny Miller (Matt Walker), as the session spirals into a confessional tug of war fuelled by booze, drugs and self-examination.
The material lands with crisp comic timing and the pacing maintains a certain rhythm without sacrificing the emotional beats that give the story life.
Brouwer delivers a nuanced performance that avoids turning the star’s well-known eccentricities into mere caricature. Her comedic instincts are sharp, but it’s the flashes of vulnerability — the cracks beneath the camp — that make the performance compelling. Her chemistry with Matt Walker who plays Danny Miller keeps the tension taut, elevating the script’s mix of farce and drama.
The set design effectively recreates the nostalgia of a 1960s recording studio, adding authenticity without distracting from the performers.
While Looped relies heavily on rapid-fire dialogue and Bankhead’s oversized personality, the Northumberland Players find balance, allowing the quieter moments to resonate. The result is a production that is both lively and unexpectedly moving, offering audiences a thoughtful look at fame, failure and the messy humanity behind an icon.
