Social Security

by Andrew Bergman

Directed By
GREG MACPHERSON

Produced By
LINDA ARMSTRONG

The hilarious comedy surrounds a married couple who are art dealers. Their domestic tranquility is shattered upon the arrival of the wife's goody-goody nerd of a sister, her uptight CPA husband, and her archetypal Jewish mother.

They are there to try to save their college-student daughter from the horrors of living only for sex. The comic sparks really begin to fly when the mother hits it off with the elderly artist who is the art dealers' best client!

If you are in the mood for a fast-paced play full of belly laughs and gags, then this is the show for you.

Northumberland Players deliver big laughs with ‘Social Security’

Social Security, the latest instalment of the Northumberland Players Dinner Theatre has opened at The Best Western Plus Cobourg Inn & Convention Centre.

Written by Andrew Bergman, directed by Greg MacPherson and produced by Linda Armstrong, this play delivers a full two acts of non-stop comedy, the perfect antidote for anyone suffering the winter blues.

Social Security is set in the mid 1980’s in New York City at the trendy apartment of Barbara and David Khan. Barbara (Kim Brouwer) and David (Michael Johnson) are two successful art gallery owners living in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. After a visit from Barbara’s sister Trudy (Nancy Gallagher) and her husband Martin (Neil Torrie) the couple’s lives are interrupted when Trudy surprises them by leaving their eccentric mother, Sophie (Claire Rowett) in their care. When a 98-year-old world renowned artist Maurice Koenig (John “MINKIE” Mencarelli) comes to dinner, a new chapter begins for everyone.

In the Director’s Note, Greg MacPherson said, “At its heart, this play is an exploration of family dynamics, love, and the unexpected ways life can surprise us, no matter our age.”

With a combination of sharp timing and physical comedy, this is a great cast who are all comedic heavy hitters, each actor effortlessly delivers laugh after laugh without losing steam from beginning to end.

The set, a New York City apartment is a character in itself, full of nostalgic nods to the mid 1980’s. The costumes also nail this time period with some spectacular sweaters, blazers and female shape wear.

Even though this play is set in the 1980’s, the production tackles the timeless topics surrounding generational gaps, the love and sacrifices of the family caregiver, but most importantly, it’s a tribute to the family matriarch and the wisdom they impart on a family.

We’re living in the time of the ‘super-ager’, a term referring to individuals in their 70s and 80s with the mental and physical capabilities of their decades-younger counterparts. Social Security celebrates both the love and adventure awaiting us at any age, a reminder that we never need to stop or slow down, especially when it comes to our passions in life and that its never too late to begin again.

This is an uplifting show, grab some tickets and enjoy a great evening out!
