Helping his father run a struggling small-town funeral home has gotten in the way of Harry Gibson's love life. Missing his recently departed mother, and hungry for companionship, he secretly turns to an unconventional method of meeting a woman: an online Russian bride service.

The beautiful bride-to-be Katya and her acerbic older sister Eva arrive on Canadian soil and are plunged into culture shock while the Gibson family is thrown into a hilarious tailspin.

This is a comedy with some great Canadian humour and a heart-warming plot twist at the end.

NORTHUMBERLAND PLAYERS BRINGS CANADIAN-AWARD WINNING PLAY ‘GIBSON AND SONS’ TO THE STAGE

‘Gibson and Sons’ is now playing at The Best Western in Cobourg for The Northumberland Players’ 49th season.

This award-winning play is written by Kristen Da Silva, Directed by Jeremy Henson and Produced by Rebecca Reid and Jacky Boyagian. ‘Gibson and Sons’ is packed with the quirks and charms that make our Canadian culture so endearing.

In his Director’s Notes, Henson says, “This almost farcical drama is created through a combination of human conditions, not only humour but also grief, longing, loneliness and desire!”

Harry Gibson (Matt McPhee) helps his father, Declan (Jim Ross) run a funeral home in their small Canadian town. The family is grieving the recent loss of the matriarch of the family and Harry finds himself lonely and craving a family of his own. Harry secretly turns to a Russian bride service to fill the gap in both is life and his heart. Soon Katya (Emily Wilkinson), Harry’s soon-to-be-wife arrives in Canada with her sister Eva (April Corning). The arrival of the two Russian sisters sends shockwaves through Harry’s family including his Aunt Jo (Kelly Ambrose), brother Luke (Josh Lambert) and the eager and lovesick intern Becca (Anita Corsi). What unfolds is a comical series of events that not only brings the family together but teaches us an age-old lesson: what we are searching for could be right in front of us.

The talented cast flawlessly delivers some big laughs even through the lens of grief and loss, proving laughter is the best medicine…a couple of beers help too.

As always, the Northumberland Players brings together a community of creative volunteers both on and off the stage who play a pivotal role in the success of this charming production. Well done everyone!
