Reviews
Kristin Andrews, Northumberland NewsNorthumberland Players’ ‘Clue’ production is a dinner to die for
‘It’s time to play:’ This show takes a lot of energy, with great physical comedy and timing, writes columnist Kristin Andrews
Welcome to “Boddy Manor” where you can expect an evening of fine dining, entertainment and murder.
Northumberland Players’ bring the classic board game and 1985 film “Clue” live to the stage in their latest instalment of dinner theatre at the Best Western in Cobourg. This stage production was adapted by Sandy Rustin from Jonathan Lynn’s screenplay, with additional material by Hunter Foster and Eric Price.
Directed by Matt Blundell and produced by Kaye Torrie and Beth Hunt, this campy and classic show completely sold out before opening night. For those of you lucky enough to have snagged tickets, you won’t be disappointed by this charming 1950s whodunit. As Blundell states in his director’s note, the performance is “all about the audience.”
This is a hard review to write because there is so much I want to talk about without spoiling the whole experience. But here are some safe details and much-deserved acknowledgments.
First, the set: Wow! This grand and moody mahogany set pulls you into the action, playing on the nostalgia of the classic board game. I wish I had dressed up in my 1950s rags, something to consider if you’re attending the show to add to a fun night out.
Along with sound and lighting, this set is clever (even incorporating the Best Western’s grand chandeliers) and brilliantly used to give the audience the full experience of being trapped for the evening in this large mansion with the rest of the characters.
The story begins when a group of strangers have been anonymously invited to dinner at Boddy Manor, each under an alias. Anxiously awaiting the guests is Wadsworth, the butler (David Hoare), French maid Yvette (Ashley Larrimore) and cook (Deb Crocker.) The guests each begin to make their entrances, including the dim-witted Col. Mustard (Neil Torrie); Miss Scarlet (Heather Jopling), a vivacious Madame; Mrs. White (Nikki Parks), a multiple divorcée; professor Plum (Don Mann), a shrink; Mrs. Peacock (Kim Brouwer), a senator’s wife with a bit of a drinking problem, and Mr. Green (Jules Olsen) a gay Republican.
Soon, we discover each guest has murky or even criminal ties to Washington, D.C. — each is on the receiving end of blackmail by “renegade McCarthyist” Mr. Boddy (Michael Johnson). Soon, the evening begins to unravel and it’s time to play.
This is a cast with wonderful chemistry — you can tell they’re having a genuinely good time up there on that stage. This show takes a lot of energy, with great physical comedy and timing.
Keep an eye out for quick but memorable performances by Tim Annis, Mackenzie Annis, Stephanie Watson and voice of the radio newscaster Jamie Hunt. This is a large ensemble and it’s impossible to mention the huge crew of volunteers who helped bring this show together — the attention to detail from start to finish is perfectly executed and the obvious result of great teamwork.
In his director’s note, Blundell says the evening “is sure to be full of surprises, laughs, and of course, a red herring or two — see if you can keep everything straight and remember, everyone’s a suspect.”
Let the game begin.
