aLL MY SONS

During WWII, Joe Keller and Steve Deever ran a machine shop which made airplane parts. Deever was sent to prison because the firm turned out defective parts, causing the deaths of many men. Keller went free and made a lot of money.

The twin shadows of this catastrophe and the fact that the young Keller son was reported missing during WWII dominate the action. A script with unbearable power, the conclusion of the play is one of the most electrifying in theatre.

All My Sons is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York.

Reviews

I was thrilled to be invited by Northumberland Players to review this play. Arthur Miller was an extraordinary playwright. Complicated and often frustrating his works always make you think and always leave an impression. I knew I was in for a treat.

All My Sons is a three-act play based on a true story. The action takes place in 1946 amidst the horrors of WW2. At the beginning of the war Joe Keller, married with two sons, and his friend and neighbor Steve Deever, married with a son and a daughter, ran a machine shop which made airplane parts.

In 1943, charged with shipping defective aircraft engine parts, which caused the deaths of many men, the two were sent to trial. Steve was found guilty and went to jail. Joe was exonerated.

Despite hard choices and even harder knocks, Joe and Kate Keller are a success story. They had built a home, raised two sons and established a thriving business. The American dream.

The play starts when Steve’s daughter Ann arrives at the Keller home. Ann had been engaged to marry Larry Keller but he died in the war in 1943. She and Chris Keller, Larry’s brother, announce they are about to marry.

Meanwhile Steve is still in jail. Inevitably, as a result of the marriage announcement, his crime is revisited. Long buried truths are forced to the surface and the price of Joe’s American dream is laid bare.

In true Miller fashion the play explores the Keller family’s complex relationships, which are burdened with shame, denial, guilt, and grief. It addresses issues of truth, loyalty, wealth, and love.

I had not seen All my Sons but I knew the storyline and I knew how it ended. Despite that I was in no way prepared for the experience I had at the Firehall Theatre.

There are too many names to mention but the direction is inspired and I cannot find the words to tell you how amazing the actors are. They are all perfectly cast and give extraordinary performances. The final Act is breathtaking, riveting and unforgettable.

Dear reader: I cannot remember the last time I had as extraordinary a theatre experience as this one.

To the Northumberland Players: bravo; brava; a tour de force.
