Passion, Dedication, and Connection

Lucy Caldwell as the Baker’s Wife in Into the Woods

It has been a dream to play the Baker’s Wife in the upcoming production of Into the Woods. After a three year hiatus, the Northumberland Players are mounting another of one their iconic musicals at the Capitol Theatre, and for everyone involved it is like a dream come true.

This show is classic musical from one of best composers and lyricists, Stephen Sondheim. The score is described as “musically sophisticated”. It is a singers dream. As the Baker’s Wife, I get the chance to sing beautiful melodies and intricate rhythms accompanied by a very talented orchestra. What more could a singer wish for?

But it’s not just the music that is magical. The story is enchanting and touching, the characters are well-developed and it’s funny! What I love most about the Baker’s Wife is that she is a real woman, she’s smart, she’s fiesty, she’s brave, and she’s flawed. She’s a good person but she makes mistakes. She gets lost in the woods. And what’s great about this show, is that the Baker’s Wife is just one of twenty two compelling characters. Where many other shows focus on one or two main characters, Into the Woods is a real team sport. All the characters are dependent on each other, their stories interwoven. We are truly in this together.

Having the opportunity to play this compelling role alongside a very talented cast and crew is like a wish granted. What I love most about community theatre is the passion, dedication and connection of everyone involved- it’s like lightning in a bottle and there’s no where I’d rather be. Trust me, you’ll want to be a part of it too.

Into the Woods plays at Port Hope’s Capitol Theatre February 24 – March 5, 2023. Get your tickets today!
