Northumberland Players Make Improvements to the Firehall Theatre to Improve Accessibility

This weekend, the Northumberland Players celebrate the season with a Holiday Special: Christmas Live at Victoria Hall.  At this time the Players are also pleased to report the completion of a project to improve accessibility at the Firehall Theatre, recognizing the $35,000 Capital grant that the Players received from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) last year. This and past OTF grant have helped the Players over the past three years with a number of upgrades.

“Our government is taking action to make a more accessible and inclusive Ontario” said MPP David Piccini. “Firehall Theatre has been a staple recreational space for our residents to come together as a community, and I am so glad that our government is making it more accessible to ensure everyone can utilize this space”.

The Firehall is the heritage building adjacent to Victoria Hall, owned by the Town of Cobourg.  The Northumberland Players have leased this space for the past 40 years and use the space for rehearsals, meetings, and Youth Camps in addition to the theatre.   The Ontario Trillium Foundation’s Capital grant enabled the group to complete the installation of accessible doors and openers at the entrances and washrooms at the Firehall Theatre.

“The Firehall Theatre is housed in a heritage building in Cobourg,” said Jack Boyagian, President and Artistic Director for the Northumberland Players. “These doors will make the facility more welcoming to all attendees, including those with mobility challenges. With the assistance of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, we have been able to make this important upgrade.”

The Ontario Trillium Foundation’s (OTF) mission is to build healthy and vibrant communities across Ontario. As an agency of the Government of Ontario, and one of Canada’s leading granting foundations, last year, OTF invested over $110M into 1,022 community projects and partnerships. Visit to learn more.
