In 1928, Cobourg’s Old Bailey courthouse was the scene of one of the most sensational legal battles in Canadian history. The case was a libel suit brought by Sir Arthur Currie because of a front-page editorial in the Port Hope Evening Guide which claimed that Currie had needlessly wasted Canadian lives, particularly during the capture of Mons on the last day of the war. The trial placed Canada’s role in the Great War under a microscope and kept the country riveted for weeks.
