About the Play

The Last Real Summer is about a first love and growing up just prior to WWII. It is 1981 and Dr. Elizabeth Wharton returns to her childhood hometown, in rural Alberta, which revives vivid memories of her youth during 1939 and 1942. As she reminisces about her family and her first love, the characters come alive for the audience, including herself (Lizzie) at the tender age of 17, her parents and the Cameron farm family.

A nostalgic and touching period piece, The Last Real Summer will surely resonate with the romance of youth and growing up in all of us.

Character Breakdown

Dr. Elizabeth Wharton – Female, believeably play age 58
She is the storyteller of the piece who feels her memories deeply and is able to depict the variety of emotions as she reminisces. She is Kathy’s mother and the elder version of Lizzie.

Lizzie Tingley – Female, convincingly able to play ages 17 and 21
Lizzie is feisty, smart and determined. She falls in love with Douglas Cameron. She is Elizabeth’s younger self.

Herbert Tingley – Male, able to play late 40s to 50
Herbert is Lizzie’s (and Elizabeth’s) father. He is a high school principal full of patience and kindness with a quiet sense of humour.

Molly Tingley – Female, able to play mid-40s
Molly is Lizzie’s (and Elizabeth’s) mother. She is clearly from Ireland and runs a strict house, but also has a sense of humour. An Irish accent would be a plus.

Douglas Cameron – Male, convincingly able to play 17 and 21
Doug is a farm boy and in love with Lizzie. He wants to explore the world and get away from farming. He is playful and adventurous.

Peggy Cameron – Female, able to play mid-40s
Peggy is Doug’s mother. A farmwife, with a quiet and unassuming manner who is content with her life on the farm.

Duncan Cameron – Male, able to play late 40s to 50
Duncan is Doug’s father. A farmer, strict, angry and bitter since he returned from WWI.

Kathy Wharton – Female, able to play mid-30s
Kathy is Elizabeth’s daughter. She is married with two children at home and is constantly checking in on them while she is visiting her mother’s hometown. She is a conscientious and loving mother and wife.

Elizabeth and Kathy appear in the year 1981. All other characters are from Elizabeth’s memories of 1939 to 1942.
