Auditions – “The Cemetery Club”

Play Summary

Three Jewish widows meet once a month for tea before going to visit their husbands’ graves. Ida is sweet tempered and ready to begin a new life; Lucille is a feisty embodiment of the girl who just wants to have fun; and Doris is priggish and judgmental, particularly when Sam the butcher enters the scene. He meets the widows while visiting his wife’s grave. Doris and Lucille squash the budding romance between Sam and Ida. They are guilt-stricken when this nearly breaks Ida’s heart.

Directed by Carol Beauchamp.

Characters

All characters are 50+. There are 4 females and 1 male. They are Jewish, and they live in Queens, NY.

  • Lucille – A feisty embodiment of the girl who just wants to have fun. Has seemingly moved on after the death of her husband. She dates, loves to spend her inheritance, but all of this is a cover up for the hurt she feels. Her husband had had a 3-year extra-marital affair of which she was secretly aware.
  • Ida – Reasonable, sweet-tempered, down to earth woman. She is faithful to the memory of her husband but questions whether it is time to move on and make the best of her later years.
  • Doris – Ultra-conservative woman, priggish and judgmental. She tends to her husband’s grave, cutting the ivy from his gravestone as if she were cutting his hair. She gave her life to her husband when he was alive and believes that she shouldn’t stop doing that even after he’s passed.
  • Sam – A neighborhood butcher who’s lost his wife. He’s respectful of his late wife’s memory, but he’s lonely.
  • Mildred – Smaller role. Obnoxious, very talkative woman.
