About the Play

Leading Ladies is a fast-paced theatrical farce full of mistaken identities, rapid costume changes, physical comedy, and unexpected romance. Set in 1950s Pennsylvania, the play follows two down-on-their-luck English actors who attempt to pass themselves off as long-lost female relatives to inherit a fortune. Their plan quickly spirals into chaos as they navigate suspicious relatives, budding love interests, and their own unraveling disguises.

This witty and high-energy comedy offers fantastic opportunities for bold character work, strong comedic timing, and physical humour.

Character Breakdown

LEO CLARK / MAXINE (Male, can play 30s–40s)
A clever and ambitious Shakespearean actor. Leo concocts the inheritance scheme and throws himself into the role of “Maxine” with flair and confidence. Must be comfortable with cross-dressing, accents, and physical comedy.

JACK GABLE / STEPHANIE (Male, can play 30s–40s)
Leo’s best friend and acting partner. Jack is sweet-natured, nervous, and reluctantly joins the impersonation as “Stephanie.” Must be comfortable with cross-dressing, accents, and physical comedy.

MEG SNIDER (Female, can play 20s–30s)
Warm, intelligent, and curious. Meg is Florence’s niece, currently engaged to Duncan but dreams of adventure. Romantic lead with depth and charm. Should be comfortable with light Shakespearean text.

AUDREY (Female, can play 20s–30s)
A lovable and slightly dim-witted young woman who works for Florence. She’s bubbly, optimistic, and eager to please. A great comedic role requiring innocence and strong physical humour.

DUNCAN WOOLEY (Male, can play 40s–60s)
A local minister and Meg’s conservative fiancé. He’s pompous, rigid, and increasingly suspicious of Leo and Jack. A foil to the absurdity around him. Dry humour and bluster are key.

FLORENCE SNIDER (Female, can play 60s–70s)
Wealthy and strong-willed, Florence is thought to be on her deathbed, but proves tougher than expected. She’s feisty, opinionated, and fiercely independent. Requires a strong stage presence and comic precision.

DOC MYERS (Male, can play 50s–70s)
A cantankerous but lovable country doctor. Direct and practical with a dry sense of humour. Florence’s longtime friend.

BUTCH MYERS (Male, can play 20s–30s)
Doc’s son. Big-hearted and physically strong but not particularly sharp. In love with Audrey. Requires comfort with physical comedy and a sense of innocence.
