Synopsis

Hilda and hubby, Sam, are recently empty-nesters, keen to enjoy life after raising two children. Their hopes are symbolized by a brand-new television set Sam purchases, visions of cozy evenings on the couch dancing in his head, blissfully unaware of the chaos that is about to ensue.

The channel is changed, however when their son, Gary ,loses his job, daughter, Janey, leaves her husband, and both adult children boomerang back to their nonplussed parents for an extended and unexpected stay.

Though the story takes place in 1950s, the plot serves as a reminder that complex family dynamics are relevant in any decade. Norm Foster has touched on the modern-day issue of children returning to the nest after moving out, and how it impacts their parents’ plan for how to spend their golden years.

The family breadwinner, works at a paper products manufacturing plant. Feels
unappreciated by employer. Excited to finally become an empty-nester.

Gary Fluck: Male Identifying, Male Lead, early 30s
Son, WW2 vetern who lived with parents until recently. Affected by war, making
poor choices, relies on parents, lost!

Janey Fluck: Female Identifying, Female Lead, early 30s
Daughter, married, comes across as spoiled “Daddy’s girl”, but her true self is
much deeper.

Bobbi Jakes: Female Identifying, Supporting Role, early 30s
Gary’s love interest, musician, hip and free-spirited…think 1960s hippy.

A nefarious gangster-type. Gary owes an outstanding gambling debt and Bev
shows up there to collect it! Very intelligent and well spoken for a thug.
