Auditions: “Beauty and the Beast”

Audition Dates:

Sunday, September 10, 1:00pm – 9:00pm
Monday, September 11, 6:30pm – 9:15pm
Tuesday, September 12, 6:30pm – 8:30pm

Callbacks Wednesday, September 13, 6:30pm

Audition Format:

Principal Roles: 10 minute slots, individual auditions
Ensemble/Other Roles: 15 minute slots in groups of 4

Dance/Movement: All auditioners will be required to attend the movement/dance audition. All auditioners should prepare a dance step/move or gymnastic movement to share (have fun with this!). As well, you will be asked to perform a short dance as directed by the choreographers.

Ensemble/other featured roles

Please note that there are “featured roles” in the ensemble that require solo singing, e.g., Babette (female, 25-35), Madame de la Grande Bouche (female, 30-60), Monsieur D’Arque (male, 40+).

Please prepare an audition song of your choice no more than 16 barsYour audition piece must be performed with a backing track. You can find most instrumental/karaoke tracks on YouTube – we will have a sound system and laptop available to play your track at your audition. If you can’t find your track on YouTube, be sure to look on Karaoke-Version.com (you can change keys on this site). If you have exhausted all other options and cannot find a backing track for your song you may bring sheet music in your key.

Children

All genders, 8-12. Children should be dancers and/or gymnasts who can also sing.

Principal Roles: these roles will require an audition piece specifically from Beauty and the Beast. All pieces must be memorized.

Belle – lead young woman, 18-30

Belle is the tale heroine. She is an insightful young woman, longs for a life of adventure and belonging. Willing to sacrifice herself to save her father, she exhibits heroic altruism and selfless love. While kind-hearted and gentle, Belle proves her strength when she stands up to the brutish Gaston. Belle should have a strong mezzo voice.

Beast – lead male, 25-40

He is a tortured soul. He is paying the price for a moment of mean-spiritedness and wishes that he can rectify his mistake. There is anger and menace in both his behaviour and appearance but increasingly we see his soft and endearing side as he interacts with Belle. It is clear he is a loving, feeling human trapped in a hideous body. This role requires a strong singer, and strong stage presence. Baritone

Mrs. Potts – lead female, 40-65

A warm-hearted, maternal enchanted teapot. She is the motherly figure to Belle. A very strong singer is needed for this role as she sings the title song, Beauty, and the Beast. This character should speak with a British accent. Alto/Mezzo

Gaston – lead male, 18-40

The absolute antithesis of The Beast. Although he is physically handsome, he is shallow, completely self-centred, not very bright and thrives on attention. When threatened his ego is bruised and becomes very dangerous. The role requires a strong singer and character actor who moves well. Baritone

Maurice – male, 45-60

Despite being a bit scatter-brained, there is no mistaking his love for his daughter Belle. Kind, gentle, enthusiastic and inventive, he becomes single-minded and determined when Belle faces danger. A strong singer. Baritone

Lefou – male, 20-40

Gaston’s dim-witted servile sidekick. He goes to extraordinary lengths and suffers repeated humiliation in his effortd to please his master. This actor must have strong physical comedy skills, and character acting. Baritone

Lumiere – male, 20-50

The French butler who was transformed into a candelabrum. He is light-hearted, suave, romantic, smooth-talking, and charming, he is romantically involved with Babette. This role requires strong character acting and should move well. Tenor/baritone

Cogsworth – male, 30-60

A tightly-wound, enchanted mantle clock and the head of the Beast’s household. He is a stuffy English man who loves perfection. This character speaks in a British accent. This role requires a strong character actor. Baritone
