Catherine Holland is the Stage Manager for ‘Into the Woods’

Having the opportunity to work as stage manager on the Northumberland Players production of Into The Woods, music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, has been a harrowing and joyous experience.  

This is not your typical musical.  It is a musically complex show with powerful messages in a magical story line.  It is also the first musical NP has produced in three years since Covid closed our doors and everyone involved in this show entered into it a tad nervous.

We made the decision from the get go that all cast and crew be masked which is not an easy task for our 22 cast members who are dancing and singing at 4 hour rehearsals.  

In the beginning, it seemed everyone was just trying to figure out their own part, as it was so musically sophisticated.  Three months later, we are now a cohesive team working together on this magical journey.  And like the story, our team had to face the scary unknown together, in essence going into the woods, and we began to discover ourselves through the process.

And now I don’t want to ever leave the woods…
